Want to challenge your spiritual life a bit?  Then I'd say to pick up Max Davis' When Jesus was a Green-Eyed Brunette and let the words sink in.  Davis uses real-life encounters and true stories to show how we can draw near to God in the most unexpected ways.  He shows how Jesus is alive and well and STILL doing supernatural things through his in depth look at scripture and life stories.  I am not sure how you can read this and not come away with new eyes to see Christ moving all around you.  He starts off in the first chapter introducing us to the Green-Eyed Brunette who changed his life with her story.  As Davis states, "It's a book about how real He really is and how allowing Jesus to live through us impacts our circumstances and the people around us."

Refresh: Spiritual Nourishment for Parents of Children with Special Needs

Sometimes we just need to be encouraged and that is exactly what this book did for me.  Parenting isn't easy to start with, but throw in a child with special needs and those challenges can be overwhelming.  We are going through this in our very own home as we speak...nothing easy about this task that we are called to.  But a breath of fresh air came to me in the form of Kimberly Drew and Jocelyn Green's book Refresh.  It is a compilation of stories about parenting children who have all forms of special needs....the challenges, the joys, and so much more.  It is one of those books that you need to devour slowly and process but I was encouraged over and over through the words of many who have gone before me on this journey.  If you need encouragement today - don't miss this book.

The 10 Myths of Teen Dating

When your kids reach the dating ages, it can be scary!  I am always looking for books that can help guide me as a parent as our kids enter these years.  Daniel and Jacquelyn Anderson's book, The 10 Myths of Teen Dating: Truths Your Daughter Needs to Know to Date Smart, Avoid Disaster, and Protect Her Future is JUST THAT BOOK!

Daniel Anderson and his daughter, Jacquelyn, have co-authored a guidebook for parents as their daughters (and sons) enter the dating world.  I did add sons on there - as I think much of the information would be relevant for boys - but it is very much geared to daughters.  The book is easy to read and well laid-out.  I thought it was a fast read but also one I will go back to over and over as my daughter gets closer.  You can learn more by visiting their website.

Kara Tippetts and Jill Lynn Buteyn have written Just Show Up - the dance of walking through suffering together.  This book is POWERFUL.  I am sure you can't think of anyone - maybe even yourself - that you know who has NOT gone through suffering of some sort.  It's everywhere and it's inevitable.  But when we suffer, Christ has a plan to give us His hands and feet here on this earth to help us - to come alongside and encourage us and help us get through.  Through Kara's personal story of disease, we learn what it is to suffer alongside someone - to give the gift of silence, the art of receiving and what it means to just show up.  I highly recommend this - for personal reading or even a study - I think sharing it with others would add much to the reading of this book.  Let's all read it and learn how to come alongside and be the Body - it is a VERY valuable resource.

Pass It On

When our children were growing up, I read almost every parenting book I could get my hands on.  I just wanted my kids to be strong children, capable of functioning as strong adults, but also children who loved their childhood and would look back with fond memories on their spiritual upbringing.  This book, Pass It On, by Jim Burns and Jeremy Lee, would have been on my list had it been around back then!

Burns and Lee have crafted a book that gives parents practical ways to teach their children at home and share their faith grade by grade as their children grow.  I love that they have put time into finding appropriate activities for your child as he/she is capable of understanding them.  From a Bible presentation in second grade to a blessing ceremony in seventh grade - there are just a multitude of ways to teach your child and build on a solid biblical foundation. 

This will be a wonderful resource for our young families - to treasure and use as their children grow and mature in Christ.

Radical Together

David Platt has hit another one WAY out of the ballpark.  This book focuses on the problems within the
Church today.  Platt hopes, through his book, to unite the church with a gospel-centered vision.  He has crafted this around six very short chapters -

2.The Gospel Misunderstood: The gospel that saves us from work save us to work

Platt uses real life examples he has run into during his years in ministry and in his own life to challenge us to be the difference and make the change in our churches today.  Great book!

Never Say No

Mark and Jan Foreman have written a book called Never Say No:  Raising Big-Picture Kids.  I can tell you that this couple KNOWS their stuff.  They are all about having a relationship with our kids - not just getting them to behave.  Their book is full of useful, practical ways to encourage your kids to be creative, imaginative, and cultivate their unique gifts.  It's all about bringing the love and nature of God to the world and that's what they focus on in parenting as well.  Their advice is tested and has been successful with their two boys - both singers in the group Switchfoot.  I encourage you to pick this one up - it's WELL WORTH the read!

Passages

Are you feeling bored in your spiritual life?  Feel like you've hit a wall and are sliding down?  Brian Hardin tackles this in his book, Passages.  If you feel like your daily Bible readings are not very meaningful - you will love how Hardin tries to challenge you that your daily reading might just change you AND become the highlight of your day.  First he helps you to see that there is a big God that loves you and wants to be part of your life and he shows you how you can find time to spend with God and make a plan to see it happen.  He sets up a reading plan for the next year to get you through the entire Bible chronologically.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book - Hardin makes you think AND laugh - and I value that in a writer!  He is grounded and practical - just what we NEED!  Check out his great book AND his website.

Surprised by Oxford

I am telling everyone I know that they MUST pick up this book - what a wonderful read Carolyn Weber has crafted.  Surprised by Oxford is Carolyn's memoir of her journey to Christ through Oxford.  I loved everything about this book - her writing is fabulous!  She weaves in many references to literature as she teaches literature and her background comes through loud and clear.  What I love about this book is that Weber heads off to Oxford to study - NOT to find God - but her journey is chronicled so well that you, as the reader, can feel her struggle as she strongly makes it clear she DOES NOT need God.  Weber is a pretty strong woman with strong feminist ideas - her journey is fantastic and will resonate with many people that read it.  Her questioning is real and the answers people give her in her journey are thoughts we can all relate to and may have heard ourselves along the way.  I would give this to skeptics, new believers, and people who've been believers for ages - it will challenge and encourage - I loved it!

Turning Guilt Trips Into Joy Rides

I needed this book!  Because I will admit - it is easy to load on the guilt - I am THE MASTER of that!!  Don't get me wrong - I'm not about loading it onto others but I load that guilt right onto myself.  So when I saw this blog tour I felt it was perfect for me.  Turning Guilt Trips Into Joy Rides by Shirley Brosius, Janine Boyer and Kim Messinger is a book that highly encouraged me!  This book is set up into 183 very short devotions - less than a page in length - but packed with thoughts that hit right to home.  And each is followed by scripture or prayers to encourage you to get your focus on God - where it should be.  I would recommend this book - it was easy to swallow and digest and PACKED with wisdom!  We need that, as women, to be reminded that guilt is not necessary - let's live in grace!

The Sacred Thread

Here is one for non-fiction lovers - or maybe even if you don't LOVE non-fiction!  Adrienne Arieff's The Sacred Thread is an account of Arieff's experience with surrogacy - even more interesting, surrogacy in India.  You follow her miscarriages, infertility, and then her journey through surrogate birth.  I found the book fascinating - I may live under a rock, I'll admit that, but I had no idea this surrogate birth was as popular as it was - especially traveling to India to have it done.  It was a wonderful autobiography that lends a whole new way to look at another birth experience. 
I found Arieff's writing to be easy to read - and although some parts felt a bit long to me, I did feel it kept my attention and I wanted to know how it would all end for them.  I would encourage you to pick this one up!!

Four Letter Words

A "needed" book?? Yep, this is it!  I have three teenage boys that I am trying to prepare for the big world - and what do we discuss with them the most?? How to stand firm in what we believe and how to share that with others.  So I feel that Bill Giovannetti has hit the nail on the head with his book, Four Letter Words.  We need to know WHAT we believe, WHY we believe it and WHAT to say when it seems there are no ways to put it into words - Giovannetti does just that.  As a pastor and professor - he's been through the trenches and knows how to put our faith into words that others will relate to.  This is relevant for everyone, but especially so with our teens and those heading into college - as this is when we get challenged and asked so many of these tough questions.

This book is such a great idea that it captured me - I poured over each picture and then read about each person's life that was represented by the picture of his/her hands. Terilee Dawn Ouimette's photos brought the stories to life. It is a book that keeps you turning pages and makes you think.....

The Grace Effect

When I first started reading the prologue for this book, The Grace Effect, I thought, "I am going to give this one to my husband - I think it's too deep for me!" But as I got into Chapter 1, I knew I was going to LOVE this book and I didn't put it down (well almost anyway) until I was DONE! It is an exceptional book - it is, at it's core, a wonderful adoption story - the author, Larry Alex Taunton's, story of travelling to the Ukraine and their roller coaster ride to get their 10 year old daughter, Sasha. But interwoven throughout that story, is the story of Taunton's challenge in life - to get people to see that the world IS a better place with Christianity and Christ - How Grace makes life palatable. The House of Hope

Elisabeth Gifford's The House of Hope is quite a story - one that I won't soon forget. It is the story of Robin and Joyce Hill, how they give up a wealthy lifestyle to instead, live frugally and minister to "the least of these." They choose to open a home for orphans needing urgent care and terminally ill orphans in China rather than live for themselves. This is one of those books that I just could not stop reading - it tore at my heart - but it made me smile too. The Hills are making a difference - they are pouring into lives that are sometimes looked at as "minor" or "unimportant" - they are LIVING Matthew 25:40, "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

I highly recommend this book that will challenge you - and at the very least - encourage you to remember the Hills when you pray.

Dewey's Nine Lives

There is a new Dewey on the loose!! The new paperback version of Dewey's Nine Lives: The legacy of the Small-Town Cat who Inspired Millions by Vicki Myron and Bret Witter has been re-issued. Just like the first one, this is a heart-warming read - one that makes you laugh and cry as you share the life of Dewey the library cat and see all of the lives he touches.

I enjoyed this book from the very first time I read it - it is "local news" here in northwest Iowa so that is a fun tie, but it's also just a very endearing story of a cat AND libraries and those are two of my favorite things!!
