I am not always a history fan - so to sit down and read a non-fiction historical book, often is not my first choice. But I was sent Terrorist: Gavrilo Princip, the Assassin who Ignited World War I by Henrik Rehr and it made me WANT to read history! This is a brilliant novel set in graphic novel format that captures the start of World War I and it's subsequent outcomes. The story is about Gavrilo Princeip, a young Serbian terrorist, who ultimately sets off World War I by assassinating the archduke Franz Ferdinand. It is a fictional account and that caught me as well - I was drawn in immediately by the storyline and action - yet another thing to love about graphic novels. It's just a fabulous and interesting way to learn history. I think your history buffs and graphic novel history readers will enjoy this one!
*I was sent a copy by the publisher for an honest review on my blog.

Elsewhere Chronicles
Lerner Publishing has a wonderful new Graphic Novel series called the Elsewhere Chronicles. Now, I wouldn't know how wonderful they were if I hadn't had some students read them for me!! I am not a big Graphic Novel fan myself and would have a hard time knowing what was great and what wasn't :) So the students gladly read them for me and gave them a big thumbs up! The stories take place when four kids open a passageway in the library - uncovering a world of monsters and other crazy creatures. The teens liked this series and are hoping for more!

Toon Books
I first saw this new series, Toon Books, at PLA - in fact, we even got to hear the mastermind behind the series, Francoise Mouly, speak. I have been "hooked" ever since. I just got a box of them to look over and review and they are WONDERFUL! What a great idea - beginning reading in comic book format - I LOVE IT!! Why in the world has this not been done before!?!? They are wonderful - the illustrations are fun and the stories are not lame (as beginning readers often are!!). My favorite? Jack and the Box - but hey, I'm always a sucker for a good "box" book!!
