Eva Wiseman's The Puppet is sitting right at the top of my list. It is a MUST-READ in my opinion. A great book set in a Hungarian village in 1882. Julie, is a little girl that gets caught up in the middle of a court case because her best friend, Esther, is the one that is "murdered". That is the crux of the book - did the Jews "murder" her or how else did she end up dead in the pond? There is a little bit of everything in this book - friendship, growing up, history - this is a wonderful read that even though readers may not relate through time and place, they will relate through the trials Julie goes through. It is tender and real - a great read. Oh yes, and it's based on a real court case that took place in Hungary in 1883.
