Kite Capers

Here is another wonderful Unit Study/Lapbook Study that we have thoroughly enjoyed this past week!! Kite Capers is fun and refreshing after being cooped up all winter! I had a friend ask me how I did these unit studies with all of our normal school - and I was so glad I could answer honestly - these unit studies are ALL done for you - the work is done - the books, videos, projects have all been compiled - all you have to do is choose what you'd like to do out of the study and go at it! My daughter asks me daily, "What's our next study, Mom?" She just loves them, and I have to agree - they add some "fun" back into our daily-ness of school.

Kite Capers Study covers:
Day 1: What Is a Kite?
Day 2: The History of Kites
Day 3: Kite People and Places
Day 4: Science Secrets of Kites
Day 5: Goodies and Gadgets of Kites

and oh so much more!!
The books for suggested reading were wonderful - some titles I had no idea were even out there! In fact, there were so many good titles - we are STILL reading!! And not only did we make our own kite, but we also learned something that my daughter thought was thrilling - kites came from her home country!!

What a great unit - we really enjoyed this one! Now, we just think we need to find ourselves a good kite festival and we are all set!!

George W. and We Aren't Telling a Lie!!

We just finished our George Washington Unit Study this week! What fun we had again with this study - I am telling you what - I think we've found something Chloe LOVES in unit studies/lapbooking. She tells me daily how much fun school is now and I LOVE that!!

We covered so much territory in just a week - from George Washington's beginnings to many of his jobs all the way up to his presidency. We even learned what his favorite food was and oh yes, Chloe's favorite - if he really did chop down that cherry tree!!!
Here is some of what is included in the study:
Day One: Who Was George Washington?
Day Two: People and Places in George Washington's Life
Day Three: The Accomplishments of George Washington
Day Four: Lessons to Learn From George Washington
Day Five: Remembering George Washington

I think we read almost every book that was included in the study and then even dug up a few of our own - including YWAM's Heroes of History for Young Readers - George Washington picture book AND Nest Entertainment's George Washington DVD. Great stuff out there to make a packed-full unit!

Expedition Ireland

Let's go on a trip - yep, you heard me, and I choose IRELAND!!! That is what we have done this past week - Chloe and I have ventured to Ireland and back and boy, have we learned a TON!!!
We used Amanda Bennett's Expedition Ireland unit - LOVE those units - all of the work is done for you and all you have to do is pull some books together and start learning!! We loved the Geographic Feature of the Day - and we are thinking we are pretty smart now - I mean really, the Giant's Causeway??? Just ask us, we'll fill you right in! I love the videos that we start each day off with as well - you just feel like you are there and it's a fun way to set the stage.
I asked Chloe her favorite parts and BY FAR, studying the horses was what brought a smile to her face - we read some books on horses and added some things to our lapbook on them as well. We both also enjoyed the food activities - we love to try new foods from different countries! It was also fun to see some Irish dancing and listen to the music that is included in the study - we're always "up" for new music - and TRYING to dance to it! :) What a fun unit to lead us into March - and certainly not one I would have had the time to attempt without the unit study to guide me. This is a great one and I'm glad we were able to study some Irish history - I highly recommend it, and who knows, when you start reading - you may discover your own leprechaun as well!! ( I would normally post pictures to show you some of our fun, but I totally forgot to get my camera out this week! You'll just have to take my word for it on this one!)
Don't forget - there are still some $5.00 deals through Monday!

Magnificent Moon Unit Study

I have a first grader that LOVES school - I mean, REALLY LOVES school - so when I found these units, I was thrilled (and so was she!!). We are enjoying these!! I still do my regular math, reading, phonics, writing, etc. but we just add in a few books, etc. everyday to complete these units as well. So far, we've gone through two units and she is begging for more!!

But I'm here to share our fun with Magnificent Moon today! This was a good unit for us, we haven't done much with outer space, so Chloe really enjoyed this unit. These units are very well thought-out. We love how there is such a variety - videos, read alouds, informational reading books, and, our favorite part - LAPBOOK stuff
galore!! This is something new to us - we haven't tried lapbooking, but we are LOVING it!! You certainly don't have to turn the unit into a lapbook, but if you wanted to, then they make it very easy for you to do that.

This unit was broken up into 5 days - and it is very clear what to cover each day.
Day One: What Exactly is a Moon?
Day Two: Getting to Know the Moon
Day Three: The Story of the Moon
Day Four: Science Secrets of the Moon
Day Five: Cool Things About the Moon

We learned so many new things - Chloe is STILL talking about visiting the moon!! We even supplemented some of our own book finds - so if you do this unit - make sure to add The Moon by Felicia Law - what a fun read!! This unit study has daily studies on astronauts which was also
fun - again, you could go MUCH MORE in depth than we did in first grade, but that is what I love about these units - you can tailor them to the ages you are teaching - and add to them, or decide what not to do based on your children.

IF these sound interesting to you and your kids - there are some good deals right now:
A Giveaway for THESE!!! (to be announced TOMORROW - so stay tuned!!)
